MIT and the National Research Foundation of Singapore recently designed a series of self-driving golf carts that help to transport tourists throughout the city. While many cities have designed shuttle services specifically for visitors, Singapore is the first city to use autonomous vehicles as a form of public transportation.
The self-driving golf carts go by the name 'SMART' and operate at public gardens throughout the city. Tourists can book the service simply by selecting a designated pick-up and drop-off time. The golf carts can then transport passengers to designated locations by using a series of cameras and vehicle-mounted sensors. While the autonomous vehicles can only move at a speed of 15 mph, the carts are able to provide tourists with an easy way of getting around.
Although the technology is still in the early stages of testing, the autonomous vehicles could prove extremely useful for resorts and other vacation destinations.
