The 'Aquabreather' Converts Exhaled Carbon Dioxide Into Oxygen

The Hydroid Aquabreather is a futuristic scuba diving helmet that is designed to make use of the chemistry of metal superoxides to make it possible for scuba divers to explore depths of up to 42 metres for up to an hour without having to lug heavy cylinders and other conventional scuba diving gear.

The Hydroid Aquabreather uses a mix of sodium superoxide and potassium superoxide to allow for ample absorption of carbon dioxide, which is then converted into oxygen. This special mixture is stored in replaceable cartridges, each of which can allow around an hour of diving.

This scuba diving helmet works by ensuring that air is not exhaled into the outside environment but rather circulates inside and enters the cartridge, where it is converted into oxygen.

Available for preorder, the Hydroid Aquabreather may represent the future of scuba diving.
Trend Themes
1. Regenerative Scuba Diving Gear - The trend towards regenerative scuba diving gear helps reduce the load of lugging heavy tanks and keeps divers submerged for longer periods.
2. Chemical Compositions as Life-support Systems - Applying chemistry in novel ways, like Hydroid's use of superoxides, is a trend that helps create more efficient life-support systems for divers and astronauts alike.
3. Sustainable Underwater Exploration - The trend towards sustainable underwater exploration drives innovation to create more eco-friendly diving equipment like the Hydroid Aquabreather.
Industry Implications
1. Scuba Diving Equipment - The scuba diving equipment industry needs to step up and offer lightweight, green equipment with longer dive times to keep pace with the ongoing trend of regenerative diving gear.
2. Space Exploration - Hydroid's use of superoxides and chemistry in general is a game-changer in creating life-support systems not just for divers, but also for those who explore outer space.
3. Aquatic Tourism - The trend towards sustainable underwater exploration, brought about by innovations like the Hydroid Aquabreather, is key in driving sustainable tourism efforts that attract divers with a lower ecological footprint.
