Wall-Jumping Robots

UC Berkeley's SALTO Robot Jumps Higher Than Any Other Machine

The SALTO robot is a jumping machine designed by researchers from UC Berkeley. Thanks to a design inspired by animals in nature, the SALTO robot jumps higher than any other machine relative to its own height.

SALTO stands for "Saltatorial Locomotion on Terrain Obstacles." Saltatorial is the latin term that biologists use when studying jumping in animals, and the "terrain obstacles" segment of the name refers to the SALTO robot's capabilities. Beyond its record-breaking single jump, the bot is able to kick off of a vertical surface once in the air, thus increasing its net height even further.

The SALTO robot's locomotion was inspired by the galago, also known as the bush baby. Noticing that the galago entered what the researchers term a "supercrouch" before jumping, they incorporated that stance into their robot.
