In fact, salt is an age-old symbol of purification and mourning in Japan, and these salt mazes by Motoi Yamamoto are the patient artist's attempt to commemorate the life of his deceased sister. The word "patient," however, doesn't even begin to describe his painstaking but beautiful work. The tunnel maze pictured in this gallery, for example, was unveiled this month at the Fondation Espace Ecureuil in France and took over five days to complete. It is, up to this point, one of his largest exhibits yet.
