Simon Butterworth Captures Painting-Like Aerial Images of Salt Flats

At first glance, it is difficult to distinguish what these images are, but surely salt flats was not your first guess. Photographer Simon Butterworth took these captivating images from a plane flying above Australia's salt flats, now seen in his 'Blue Fields' project.

Originally, Butterworth was scheduled to photograph Shark Bay, a site with of thousands of acres islands and peninsulas. Instead, the Useless Loop Solar Salt Operation peaked his interest more.

To gain such a vivid picture of the Salt Flats, Butterworth's pilot came up with the idea of removing the plane's rear door so the photographs would not be obstructed by anything. The result are these stunning images of pale blue salt flats that resemble more of a watercolor painting than aerial photography.
