Japanese designer Rie Sakamoto is calling attention to stationery items with "overlooked qualities" with her rubber band garments. The knitted silhouettes are made as part of the creative's thesis project for Tama Art University in Tokyo, Japan and were presented to the public at a group graduate exhibition in January of this year.
The rubber band garment collection includes a dress and a jacket, entirely made out of a singular elastic material. While the clothing is not ideal for everyday wear, the project is aesthetically driven and it establishes regular, everyday objects as a medium for art.
Rie Sakamoto's garments are rich in texture and feel. The stretchy quality of the bands allows them to "morph to different body shapes and sizes."
