Independent Compact Rooftop Homes

MINI Living & FreelandBuck Design a Functional Micro Home in LA

A rooftop home has been built on top of a former industrial structure in Downtown Los Angeles. The project is executed by Oke Hauser and Corinna Natter of MINI Living in collaboration with architecture firm FreelandBuck. It is a part of an ongoing initiative to develop functional micro homes that respond to the spatial limitations and terrain difficulties of the urban landscape.

The rooftop home has a 15 square meter base. In order "to take advantage of the LA weather" and respond to the dynamic of the city, FreelandBuck leaves the facade of the house partially open. In doing so, the rooftop home is extended, creating an illusion of more space.

To satisfy the aesthetic needs of a rooftop home in LA, the firm installs "blue and pink trompe-l'oeil graphics [...] on the outside of the panels," facilitating an engaging visual dynamic.
