This mini robot hand is the first to be used in a real surgery. Developed by Virtual Incision Corporation in California, the robotic surgical assistant can perform complex operations inside the human body using tools similar to ones already in use by surgeons. Although people have been discussing the application of robotics in the medical field for some time, the recent operation in Paraguay brought the futuristic dream into a present reality.
The robot hand is unlike larger machines that can do things outside of the body, as it is small enough to actually go inside. The self-contained device is inserted into the body via a small cut in a patient's abdominal area. The less-invasive approach could potentially cut down on costs as well.
