The Robert Knight 'Sleepless' collection of long-exposure photography documents people sleeping -- or trying to sleep -- throughout the night. Inspired by his restless nights of insomnia after becoming a parent, the Boston-based artist tackled the extremely difficult and tedious process of photographing people's sleep patterns.
The photos are both unsettling and calming. The relaxing nature of sleep makes the picture serene, but the way that the subjects are blurred and phantom-like exudes a dark and somewhat sinister vibe. To ensure that the subject was blurred while keeping the background in focus, Knight would have the subject open the shutter before they went to sleep and close it again before day-break hit. Needless to say, each shot was a painstakingly long process.
The Robert Knight Sleepless photos are an homage to the frustrating nature of insomnia, and how darkly beautiful the tossing and turning that occurs in beds across the planet can be.
