Using RFID tags, the Danish city of Aarhus is trialling a system where cyclists can turn traffic lights green. Cycling is a popular mode of transport for many Scandinavian countries and as a more environmentally friendly option, it makes sense that municipal governments there would be interested in further investment.
The trial involves attaching RFID tags from ID-Advice to bicycle wheels. The tag is programmed to send a signal to a nearby reader, which has the power to change the light. This essentially lets the light know there are cyclists approaching and will need to cross, not unlike pedestrian push buttons who would like to cross the street. However, in this case the cyclist would never have to stop the bike.
