Robotically Named Guinea Pigs

Janelle Shane's Neural Network Named Rescued Guinea Pigs

Janelle Shane, the computer science blogger with a PhD from UC San Diego, has recently put her skills toward a worthy cause: naming a shelter full of rescued guinea pigs. As with previous projects, Shane used a neural network that she developed to come up with a list of names for the little fuzzballs.

Shane undertook the project after being approached by the Portland Guinea Pig Rescue. The facility frequently takes in large litters of guinea pigs at once, and the critters come in without names. Rather than painstakingly naming each one, the PGPR asked Shane if she could develop a neural network for guinea pig names.

Some of the accepted names include Hanger Dan, Popchop, Fuzzable, Stargoon, and more. Shane humbly included some of the attempts that went awry, like Fleshy, Butty Brlomy, and Boooy.
