The 'MESSAGE' Project (Mobile Environmental Sensing Systems Across Grid Environments) is a UK initiative to raise awareness about pollution levels by letting users see the smog in their city in real time.
The simulator draws its data from a sensor network throughout Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. According to the 'MESSAGE' page, these sensors detect carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, other pollutant levels, temperature, humidity and noise levels, as well as a count of vehicle passages. The data on the simulator is refreshed every minute.
