Pyri is a Wildfire Detector Made from Wax and Charcoal

The Pyri is an impressive wildfire-detecting device that had won the UK James Dyson Award. It takes on the shape of a pinecone and is crafted using wax and charcoal. The inspiration behind the Pyri is from nature itself and it nods to the botanical phenomenon recognized as 'pyriscence.' This is where plants in wildfire-prone sections have adapted to release seeds in high heat.

The device fuses organic electronics and carbon-based compounds so that they are potentially biodegradable as well for a sustainable build. It is created by four students at the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London -- Richard Alexandre, Karina Gunadi, Blake Goodwyn, and Tanghao Yu.

Alexandre shares with Dezeen, "There genuinely are no similar ideas or concepts on the market to Pyri. Unlike traditional methods, which rely heavily on sensors, cameras and satellites – often limited by coverage, accuracy and high costs – Pyri offers an effective, affordable solution suitable for extensive deployment, even in remote location."
