Performance artist Casey Jenkins recently debuted a new show called 'Programmed to Reproduce,' which tackles the issue of online harassment. Jenkins is best known for her 2013 show 'Casting Off My Womb,' which involved her knitting with period blood-stained yarn. Although the show resulted in a great deal of online harassment, Jenkins is now putting the negative comments to good use.
Programmed to Reproduce debuted at the Australia's Festival of Live Art, which runs until March 11th. During the show, Jenkins uses an industrial knitting machine to produce banners that reveal some of the negative comments she has received online. Jenkins also reads the comments out loud, giving viewers a glimpse inside the dark world of online harassment. Audience members are then invited to share their own experiences with online harassment in order to create a conversation around personal identity in the digital age.
Jenkins' show ultimately offers an interesting look at gender and bullying in the age of the Internet.
