Since 2017, the Kupol 3D-printed bicycle helmet has been in the development and as of the fall of 2018, the innovative product is set to be introduced via a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.
The helmet design is made using a common plastic powder material that is advantageous for its thickness and density. The Kupol helmet integrates a three-part patent-pending KOLLIDE safety system that includes a collapsible 3D KORE, outer KINETIC BUMPS and over 100 sucker-like OKTOPUS pods, which offer a comfortable, aerated fit and absorb impact. In addition to the design advantages that the use of 3D printing technology offers, a helmet can be produced in a span of about 12 hours with additive manufacturing.
As Gabriel Boutin, the CEO of Kupol, puts it, "the foam helmet as we know it has not significantly advanced in more than twenty years. It’s high time for a revolution."
