Massachusetts-based photographer Blake Finch became increasingly concerned with 'Princess Culture' as her four-year-old daughter became immersed in it.
Princess culture refers to the period in a girl's life when she is enchanted by princesses and the fanatical world they exist in. It is a hotly debated issue among mothers and scholars, with some arguing it's simply a phase, and others insisting it bears a harmful impact to the female construction of self.
To ease her anxieties and more fully explore the phenomena, Finch began the 'Dress Rehearsal' project. In it, Finch captures young girls dressed as their favorite Disney princesses. However, wanting to articulate the girls' vision of themselves, without projecting any preconceived notions about gender roles and femininity, Finch allows them to bring their own personal belongings to the shoot. Moreover, the series is shot outdoors, so as to separate the archetypal "princess" from the domestic sphere she is all too frequently associated with.
