Royal Stamp Art

Peter R. Mason Creates 'Post Pop Art' Collages

Peter R. Mason is a British artist who recreates British celebrities and royalty with his post pop art. Mason's post pop art is actually a series of giant collages made out of thousands of stamps made to resemble portraits from afar.

Putting a bunch of stamps together to make an image may sound easy, but Mason's post pop art is actually more complicated than it looks. Mason starts by drawing the image he wants to create and then sectioning it off into stamp-sized squares. The squares are then sorted by their color, postmark and design before being soaked to remove the backing. Once the stamps have been soaked, they are dried and glued onto the canvas.

Typical paintings take around 3,500 stamps, with some large portraits taking upwards of 22,000 stamps.
