Pop-Up Bike Racks

Union and Natwerk Bring Additional Bike-Friendly Infrastructure to Amsterdam

This pop-up bike rack spans the size of one parking spot, fits eight bicycles and is absolutely mobile. "Designed to bring extra infrastructure to an area where it’s difficult to find a place to lock [up]," the structure has been conceived in partnership between Dutch bike brand Union and creative agency Natwerk. The pop-up bike rack is both convenience-focused and it makes a statement about the city's dominant focus on accommodating cars on the road — particularly in the United States.

To pull off this initative, Union and Natwerk found loopholes in the system that would assure that the pop-up bike rack is not violating traffic laws. The four-wheeled structure is equipped with a license plate and when parked in a space, the collaborative team feeds the meter €4 for the hour.
