Aldi will Eliminate Plastic Applicators from its Tampons

UK retailer Aldi has announced that it will be removing plastic applicators from its own tampon brand in a bid to eliminate plastic waste and adapt to the preferences of consumers. The new initiative by the retailer is positioned to save more than 14 tonnes of plastic per year and will be replaced with cardboard. The move comes as one of a growing number of plastic replacement options that are being brought to market as consumers demand alternatives to the material.

Managing Director of Corporate Responsibility at Aldi UK and Ireland Fritz Walleczek spoke on the new plastic applicators saying, "We’re constantly reviewing our product range to remove and replace unnecessary, single-use plastic and applicators are an example of exactly this."

The retailer is on track to have all of its own products packaged in materials that are recyclable, reusable or even compostable by 2022.
