In an effort to unveil the potential of the sun’s energy to the world, the super-sized PlanetSolar catamaran is scheduled to circumnavigate the globe and make its statement on eco-friendliness.
The fully sun-powered watercraft carries the world’s largest mobile solar array, whose photovoltaic panels cover an impressive 470 square meter area, forming a landmark deck. Constructed by Knierim Yacht Club in Kiel, Germany, the 30 meter long and over 60 tons in weight catamaran can accommodate up to fifty people and will be traveling at an average speed of 18.5 km/h.
The massive sun-energised wonder aspires to cover more than 40,000 km within 120 days, circling the world from East to West along an equatorial route which will provide the greatest amount of sunlight. Across the Atlantic, the Pacific and the Mediterranean, the imposing PlanetSolar will show off its eco-conscious stance in many prominent cities such as Monaco, Paris, Marseille, Dubai, Abu-Dhabi, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Hambourg, New York and San Francisco.
