Microsoft is launching the new Phi-3 Mini, a small AI model designed to help users with custom applications. Trained on a small dataset or "curriculum," Phi-3 Mini utilizes knowledge from children's books to tackle larger topics and issues while providing general knowledge. Phi-3 represents a significant advancement in AI capabilities, excelling in both coding and reasoning tasks compared to its predecessors Phi-1 and Phi-2. While Phi-3 possesses a foundation of general knowledge, it's important to note that its scope is narrower compared to larger models like GPT-4 or other comprehensive language models (LLMs).
Microsoft also has plans to debut the Phi-3 Small (7B parameters) and the Phi-3 Medium (14B parameters).
"Some customers may only need small models, some will need big models and many are going to want to combine both in a variety of ways," said Luis Vargas, vice president of AI at Microsoft.
