The Peugeot 208 Hybrid is a demonstrator car that is fitted with a gasoline-air powertrain. It offers a fuel economy of 2 liters per 100 km.
The Peugeot 208 Hybrid's Hybrid Air powertrain brings together a 1.2-liter gasoline engine with a compressed-air drive. The car carries a comprssed air tank below the trunk, and has a low-pressure expansion tank mounted right by the rear axle. The compressed air works with a hydraulic motor system to power the car.
The car has a zero-emissions 'Air mode' for low-speed urban driving, a 'petrol mode' for highway driving and a Combined mode.
The car was built around the 82-horsepower 1.2-liter PureTech 208 five-seater car. The car's carbon composite body panels and coil springs were swapped out. The exhaust system's stainless steel was thinned out to provide a 20% weight reduction, helping slice the vehicle's down by 100 kg.
