This Upcycled Furniture Piece Takes Inspiration from Barnacles

Not often do you have a piece that is visually stunning and artistically inspired, but this piece of upcycled furniture is certainly a conversation starter.

Designer Stuart Haygarth was looking through a photo book that featured deep sea ship wrecks and found inspiration to create this piece. Particularly, Haygarth was interested in the look of algae and barnacles as they grew off of things like old ships on the bottom of the ocean in its underwater landscape.

Haygarth created a piece called 'Barnacle,' in which he would collect black plastic objects on the beach, casting groupings of them in black polyester resin and attaching them to a sideboard. This gave them a rich, thick look of uniformity that resembled that of the barnacles on a shipwrecked ship to create this upcycled furniture.
