It's easy to forget that virtually everything consumers come into contact with on a daily basis was at one point transported in the trailer of a sixteen wheeler, and the Otto big rigs are realizing a way to make that transportation network more efficient. As part of a promotional campaign with Anheuser-Busch, the Uber-owned company sent its autonomous Otto big rigs across 120 miles to deliver cases of beer.
The Budweiser deliveries took place in Colorado, where such a self-driving journey is legal. For the trip, the Otto big rig transported 51,744 cans of Bud from Fort Collins to Colorado Springs, rolling through downtown Denver on its journey.
Though the majority of the mileage on the trip was driven with Otto's autonomous driving technology, the fine maneuvering that takes place at the very beginning and end were handled by a licensed trucker.
