With the installation of NEXT display signs, public transit users are going to be informed in advance about the volume of oncoming carriages. You wouldn't again feel unlucky about waiting where an overcrowded coach happens to pull up; you're given the opportunity to move. The concept relies on the placement of these digital boards along train station platforms with at least one for every three cars.
Each LED sign has a graphic along the top that communicates the capacity of the upcoming subway. Green, yellow and red bars indicate plenty of space, sufficient space and a full load respectively, complete with icons of sitting people in sparse or dense arrangements. Designed by a group from the Zhejiang University, the NEXT display syncs up wirelessly with information gathered inside of the carriages by sensors and cameras.
