Nettadonna, LLC, winner of the Enablers award for the Tech Challenge for Atrocity Prevention, co-created by USAID and Humanity United, aims to end the use of minerals taken from conflict zones in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Under new government rulings, businesses are facing new and better challenges to ensure that they use materials that are fair and blood-free.
"On August 22, 2012 the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) adopted rules that require companies to disclose annually whether the minerals used in the functionality or production of a manufactured product are ‘DRC Conflict Free," the website reads. As a result of this and the ongoing struggle in the DRC, Nettadonna, LLC saw an opportunity for software that could be used during the design stage of electronic products to ascertain that the materials needed would, in fact, be conflict-free.
