The Navy e-Reader Device (NeRD) is an e-reader specially developed by the US Navy for submarine sailors. Submarine personnel often spend weeks and even months inside a submarine, and books are a popular way for them to not lose their minds while locked underwater.
The Navy e-Reader Device is designed to provide e-reader capabilities without the networking capabilities that could pose a security risk. The e-reader doesn't have USB compatibility, Wi-Fi or the ability to add or remove anything from its digital library. This is because these features could potentially result in the leakage of classified information -- should the device be misplaced while on land -- and because the device could be hacked if it had WiFi connectivity.
The device features 300 books from the Navy General Library Program, with titles ranging from Game of Thrones to Don Quixote.
