Swedish ferry company Green City Ferries is launching the Movitz, which it claims is the world's first 'supercharged' electric passenger ferry. The Movitz is part of a drive to implement more electric ferries around Europe to reduce costs and environmental impact.
With a capacity of 100 passengers, the ferry will need only 10 minutes to charge its batteries between hour-long service runs. This quick usage cycle removes the need for expensive, bulky battery packs.
The Movitz is equipped with two 125 Kilowatt motors driven by 180 Kilowatt-hours worth of nickel-metal-hydride batteries. The electric drive system is expected to reduce running costs by 30% in comparison with regular diesel ferries. It is also far more eco-friendly than diesel ferries, which put out 130 tons of carbon dioxide and 1.5 tons of nitrous oxide a year while burning around 50,000 liters of diesel per year.
