The Motorola Defy Satellite Link Works with Any Smartphone

The Motorola Defy Satellite Link is an emergency piece of technology that's perfect for smartphone users to incorporate into their collection of gear.

The device works by being paired with any smartphone to provide it with access to the Bullitt Satellite Messenger app where users can send and receive messages over geostationary satellites. This works effectively when the user is out of range of terrestrial services and will thus work well for off-grid explorers.

The Motorola Defy Satellite Link uses satellites from EchoStar and Inmarsat for connectivity, and offers connectivity capabilities for users in North America and Europe. The addition of coverage for those in Australia, New Zealand, Latin America and Africa is expected to arrive later this year. Featuring a 600mAh battery, the unit is ruggedly designed for off-grid use thanks to an IP68 rating.
