The 'Blink' Helmet Broadcasts Motorcycle Turn Signals to Other Road Users

Motorcycling can be one of the riskiest modes of transportation, especially when other motorists can't see motorcycle turn signals on the road. The 'Blink' helmet is Alexander Christensen's design project for the University of Wellington, which makes sure that motorcyclists can ride in safety.

Wirelessly syncing to the bike itself, one of two LED lights on either side of the Blink helmet flashes, corresponding to the direction in which the rider is turning. The bright light makes everyone on the road aware of the motorcycle turn signals and thus the rider's intentions, giving drivers the information they need to keep a safe distance between their vehicles and the more vulnerable motorcyclist. As an added bonus, the light from the blinkers illuminates the motorcyclist's face, humanizing them to motorists, who often look down on motorcycles as a lesser form of traffic.
