The Reborn Cardboard Sofa was developed through the Monocomplex Sculpture Project. The design studio Monocomplex was started by four very different South Korean designers: Jangwon Cho, Eunsang Hwang, Hyunwoo Park and Taemin Kim. According to the website, the idea behind the brand was to create designs that contain, "'simple’ philosophy and sincerity in the world mixed up with ambiguity, complexity, and diversity," hence the name Monocomplex.
The Reborn Cardboard Sofa makes one simple item out of many. The designer behind for this particular Monoplex structure project was Hyunwoo Park. Shaping the cardboard by hand using a grinder and saw, Park constantly customized the chair to his body. As he sat on the 127 reused cardboard boxes, he carved away until he revealed the sofa.
