Shape-Shifting Pavilions

This Mirrored Cube Transforms into a Geometric Structure

Los Angeles-based architect Michael Jantzen recently designed a mirrored cube that transforms into a geometric pavilion. For many people, it can be difficult to find a quiet space for personal reflection. To solve this problem, Jantzen set out to create his own shape-shifting retreat.

Jantzen began his project by designing a mirrored cube that stands eight feet tall. Each side of the cube was then equipped with three mirrored panels. Two of these panels were fastened directly to the frame of the structure, while the third was designed to hinge from the other panels. When folded, the pavilion boasts a perfect square shape. However, the cube can also be unfurled to create a stunning geometric structure. Once fully open, the staggered mirrors transmit light into the structure in unique and unpredictable ways.
