This Microneedle Patch Can Deliver Immunotherapy Drugs to Tumor Sites

A group of scientists and engineers led by Dr. Chao Want at North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina have developed a high-tech wearable microneedle patch that is capable of effectively, accurately and safely delivering immunotherapy drugs directly to the site of a malignant skin tumor.

This patch is equipped with a number of microneedles that are loaded with special nanoparticles that contain antibodies as well as key enzymes. When the patch is placed on a melanoma tumor, blood seeps into the microneedles, causing release of antibodies. Experiments have shown that microneedle patch method is significantly more effective than conventional drug delivery that involves injecting the drug directly into the bloodstream or into the tumor.

Ultimately, this microneedle patch shows a lot of promise in neutralizing dangerous tumor cells rapidly and easily.
