Mercedes and Vivint Solar have teamed up to offer home battery packs. The idea is that the battery packs, which check in at 2.5 kWh and are branded with the automaker's logo, would gather energy from solar panels provided by Vivint Solar. During times of peak energy use these batteries can be used to provide free power to homes. In Mercedes eyes these batteries can be used to power its future plug-in hybrid and all-electric cars.
The Mercedes and Vivint Solar partnership is sure to be noticed by Tesla which also sells its own home battery packs known as Powerwalls. Unfortunately the battery packs do not sell for cheap, with prices ranging from $5,000 to $13,000. The battery packs can be combined to produce up to 20 kWh, which equals out to eight battery packs total.
