Taller KEN designed the Saul E Mendez menswear shop in Guatemala City as a cultural haven. The finished boutique incorporates references from colonial architecture and Mayan garments.
The building's rectangular-shaped facade has been punctuated by openings that protrude from the walls, making it appear as though the material is more pliable than it actually is. Moulded fiberglass panels were used to create a wrinkled detailing. The architects explain, "One of the characteristics of the Spanish colonial architecture preserved in Guatemala is the deep ornamental window niches. We made a play on this by pushing the windows to the exterior and, as a result, created an interior space for display."
Visitors enter the store via a crimson door that is further complemented by red armrests on a nearby bench.
