Artist Jen Lewis finds beauty in blood, a fact that's made very clear by her latest project, an interesting venture that involves photographing her own menstrual blood.
Lewis became interested in bioartography -- photographs taken during the scientific process -- during her time at the University of Michigan's Division of Infectious Diseases. She applied the same scientific approach to this project, pouring the blood from her menstrual cup into the toilet, while her husband captured it all with a DLSR camera and macro lens.
As Lewis' continued photographing her menstrual blood, she began varying her process (for instance, switching from the toilet to a tank filled half with fresh water) to get the beautiful variety seen in the photos. Lewis' project effectively takes something viewed as taboo and shameful, transforming it into something beautiful.
