Architecture studio MD41 finished a gymnasium design for a school located in Merate, Italy. The gym is formed in a cubic structure that is detailed with textured concrete panels that replaced an older gym on the site. It was built between the school on the north side and the brick piazza on the south side, which was designed by local design studio Archea Associati 14 years ago. The gym has an indoor sports court that has amenities such as bathrooms and changing rooms.
The studio speaks about the design process to Dezeen, stating "The resulting rational volume has allowed it to fit perfectly into the area and to optimize the construction system, dedicating the highest volume part to the playing field with its stands, and the lower part to other functions. [It is] intended to be a landmark for the school complex, appearing as a pure and extremely simple volume, where sports areas and closed functions are located and clearly defined."
