Students at the University of Michigan will soon get a taste of the (not necessary all that distant) future with the Mcity Driverless Shuttle. As the name implies, the shuttle buses will be fully autonomous vehicles that can transport up to 15 passengers around the UM campus.
The Mcity Driverless Shuttles are manufactured by Navya, a French tech firm. The specific model, the Navya Arma, was initially launched in October of 2015, but the vehicle has not yet seen the roads of North America. Because of the relatively contained environment on a university campus, large academies are the perfect testing ground for such nascent technology.
Not only will the fully functional shuttles transport students to various stops around the UM campus, but the university and Navya will be able to gather data about their performance to better understand how autonomous vehicles behave and perform in real-world driving environments.
