Androgynous Nomad Couture

These Masha Efremenko Looks are Bizarre and Avant-Garde

Masha Efremenko is a costume and textile designer based in Moscow with a penchant for avant-garde design, judging by her recent work.

The series, titled 'Dranoid,' incorporates pastoral aesthetics with gender-bending elements for a striking effect. Although in many shots it is easy to tell which model is a man and which is a woman, Elfremenko blends feminine and masculine aspects to the extent that it is difficult to tell the gender of the model in many others. These outfits emphasize feminine features from the waist down; from the waist up, the clothing tends to obscure the gender of the model.

Masha Efremenko's designs are also reminiscent of the garb of various nomadic groups; this is seen in the draping shawls and wooly texture of the pieces. Though these looks probably won't be popping up in retail outlets anytime soon, they are nonetheless quite creative.
