Belgrade-based photographer Marko Savic recently shot a series of photographs of himself in New York City. However, to say just this would make his work sound ordinary and commonplace. Who doesn't take photographs when they go to New York City? The difference between kitschy tourist pictures and Savic's work couldn't be greater though.
It is easy to snap off a few shots of yourself in front of some crowded tourist trap. It is not easy to take pictures of reflections of yourself -- and only yourself -- in one of the biggest and busiest cities in the world. This is exactly what Savic has done.
Each photograph depicts the visage of the photographer as reflected by some ubiquitous yet overlooked piece of the urban environment -- a car window, for instance. Somehow, there no other people or even traces of other people in the photographs. It is as though the city was abandoned.
