In celebration of Black History Month, NYC teacher Marguerite Thompson and her class created a mural on their schoolroom door, which was titled 'Adebayo,' meaning "the crown of joy."
The mural expands over the walls that surround the schoolroom door, with rolled up papers used to create tight curls that frame the woman's face. As Thompson explains, "The name is fitting as we celebrate the beauty in our blackness, and challenge societal standards of beauty."
In addition to the colorful mural that overtakes the schoolroom door, Thompson further involved her class by having them post portraits of iconic civil rights leaders beneath. Since sharing photos of the mural online, Thompson's actions have gone viral.
