Mainehouse by FreelandBuck Establishes a Unique Site Interaction

The lush forested shoreline of Portland Maine demanded an environmentally sensitive structure, though the Mainehouse by FreelandBuck may be the last sort of dwelling one might have expected to see on this site.

Making its presence very clear with its monumental geometric masses set against the delicate organic forms of tree branches and the stony waterfront, the idiosyncratic dwelling may not impose upon its surroundings in the way it may initially seem to.

The designers of this abstract abode opted for a style of architecture that would embody the interplay of solid and void, which enables the Mainehouse by FreelandBuck to sit relatively lightly on the rocky beach, supported by upturned pyramidal shapes that open into vast interior spaces.
