Contemporary Collaborative Collages

A Magazine Collage Portrait Pieces Together the Modern Woman

The process of creating this magazine collage portrait demonstrates how very different are the methods of making art to what they were in the 19th century. Agne Kisonaite looked to the familiar Ruseckas painting of the Reaper Girl––a symbolic example of the the average Lithuanian woman at the time––hoping to create a modern-day version by contemporary means.

Launching an online contest for a model, Agne selected a young girl who bears some resemblance to the original subject. She committed the model to canvas with acrylic paint, and then traced this image at a magnified scale to a 2m by 3m surface of wooden panels. This sketched outline was set up at the World Lithuanian Youth Meeting, inviting all attendees to add color using snippets of magazine pages and photographs. The artist completed her Modern Lithuanian woman after 13 days of gluing the 5348 paper pieces that were matched by color gamma.
