Robotic Living Accessories

Project Kino Uses Mini Robots to Change the Appearance of Your Clothing

A team from MIT is using miniaturized robotics to create so-called living accessories. Project Kino comes from the Living Mobile Group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Lab. The project investigates a "dynamic future in which the accessories we wear are no longer static, but are instead mobile, living objects on the body."

The roaming robotic jewelry uses sensor devices as well to help you change the appearance of your outfit, changing location while considering social context. In addition to altering unmodified clothing, the living accessories can also act as personal on-body assistants to help you do tasks when paired with existing mobile devices. From pattern-changing to grouping together to form jewelry, the tiny robots each perform different functions.

The environmentally adapting work demonstrates how fashion and technology can come together to improve the way wearers tackle everyday activities.
