Japan's Digital Nature Group has created a three-dimensional laser hologram that is safe to touch. Using lasers, mirrors and cameras, the design team created these laser holograms that form small connecting dots called voxels.
The design team used a system of lasers called femtoseconds. These lasers allow shapes to be created through laser beams and they are harmless to the human touch. The system creates "points of light emitted by plasma when a laser's focus ionizes the air," which creates small shapes such as boxes or hearts. Laser beams shoot light at incredibly high speeds and the femtoseconds laser projects images at 200,000 dots per second, which allows the images to be interacted with and broken up through human touch.
This technology has been experimented with in the past but only recently has made it to the stage of successful interaction.
