Trippy Treat Branding

Laranja Mecanica Packaging is Inspired by Anthony Burguess's Book

When designing a brand's identity, the inspiration need not always come from the product itself, but it can surface in some rather unexpected places. Interestingly, it's the novel A Clockwork Orange that influenced Laranja Mecanica packaging.

Brazilian student Jessica Comin is intrigued by the main character's journey and particularly the way in which Alex was brainwashed, resulting in a change to the way he interacted with the world. Employing heavy visual symbolism that references the plot of the book, the designer covered these chocolate boxes with images of violence and sickness.

To get to the guarded truffles in the middle, the consumer is assigned the task of taming an impenetrable-looking geometric box, eventually turning its pyramidal sides in to form a cube. Within the Laranja Mecanica packaging, round sweets are wrapped in foil to take the appearance of the eyes which first failed the protagonist.
