Designed by Frederik Nystrup-Larsen and Oliver Sundquist these knobbly vases look naturally made from lava rocks and have found a new home at the prolific Copenhagen-based restaurant Noma. Originally made as Christmas presents for their mothers, these unique vases quickly rose to prominence after being spotted on Instagram by Lea Kargaard of the architecture and design office Studio David Thulstrup. Kargaard was actually the one to introduces these pieces into Noma as she was designing the new home for the restaurant.
To achieve the look of the knobbly vases, the designers sculpted them out of solid pigment cement. This process results in truly custom shapes, as no two vases are the same. The vases are then enhanced with an application of lacquer on the inside and an exterior application of wax.
