This water-based home, dubbed Kairu House, floats off the Rockaway peninsula in Jamaica Bay. Crafted from shipping container materials and Sapele wood, this two-story home is designed to rise and fall with the natural changes in the tide.
While its stationed area continues to recover from Hurricane Sandy a decade later, Kairu House's innovative reconstruction could become an affordable, sustainable and resilient option for many dwellers in the region. The 40-feet-tall main building is made from two diagonally-cut shipping containers stacked on top of each other.
Complete with one bedroom, a full bathroom, kitchen, dining room, and living space, the Kairu House features two decks that overlook the bay. The home boasts 470 square feet of modern and contemporary interior finishes.
