John West Ecotwist Packaging Uses the SmartStrip Design

The John West Ecotwist packaging has been announced by Thai Union as a new solution for its tuna to prioritize an eco-friendly alternative to the existing options on the market.

The packaging consists of lighter cans than previously used thanks to the SmartStrip design feature that connects them together, which will reportedly save more than 400-tonnes of steel each year. The smaller can construction is also rated to reduce the amount of ingredients including spring water, sunflower oil or brine tisane an additional 1,500-tonnes of ingredients. The packaging eliminates the need for plastic shrink wrap and cardboard.

Chief Sustainability Officer at Thai Union Adam Brennan spoke on the John West Ecotwist packaging saying, "Ecotwist delivers on three fronts towards our SeaChange 2030 sustainability plan. John West moves large volumes into 100 per cent sustainable packaging, bringing Thai Union closer to having all our branded products packaged sustainably by the end of next year. The weight savings deliver directly to our target of slashing our greenhouse gas emissions by 42 per cent across the entire supply chain by 2030."
