Jellyfish Solar Cells

Swedish Researchers Develop Sustainable Tech from Sea Creatures

I find the concept of jellyfish solar cells absolutely astounding. The idea of achieving sustainable technology from living creatures is mind-boggling, although hopeful and promising as well.

Researchers in Sweden were able to derive jellyfish solar cells by dripping the green fluorescent protein (GFP) that makes the Aequorea victoria glow onto a silicon dioxide substrate between two electrodes. In fact, the protein used in the substance works compiles into strands that stretch between the electrodes. As soon as ultraviolet light from the sun hits the circuit the GFP absorbs photons and emits electrons and thus ultimately leads to a generated current.
